Hercules defeated the Hydra with 9 heads by, cutting off the head of the Hydra. Hercules called on his nephew Iolaus for assistance. When Hercules was able to cut off one head, Iolaus would cauterise the wound with a flaming torch so that another head would not grow back in place of the one that was cut off. Hercules lastly after removing the head, buried it under a large rock.
